I’m so thankful you and Bode are in a better spot this week. What a wild, unexpected experience to go through (especially during Maycember!). So many of us moms can relate to how important it is to advocate for our kids (whether it’s in a medical or school setting). It’s hard, but so necessary. I loved this piece and I love you two! ❤️
Oh Liz, sending you a hug from afar. Is there anything worse that watching your child in pain and not being able to take it away? The cliche is true: being a parent is like wearing your heart outside your body, tender and fragile and exposed.
I had to take my 3-week-old daughter to the ER when her fever spiked, and was then ushered through an awful 3 days full of IVs, catheters, and even a spinal tap (which I was urged to avert my eyes from, crying on the phone with my sisters in the waiting room). The infection hadn't spread and she was on the mend within a couple days but I will never forget how scared I was in those early hours. Even though we didn't ask for it, we've gained a little more fortitude and bravery through the heartache and fear, strengthening the confidence in ourselves and our kids that we can make it to the other side of whatever life presents us. You're a great mom, and your kids are lucky to have you. 💛
Well.. your words just gave me chills. Thank you so much. I love this: "Even though we didn't ask for it, we've gained a little more fortitude and bravery through the heartache and fear, strengthening the confidence in ourselves and our kids that we can make it to the other side of whatever life presents us."
My feelings exactly. It made me even more confident in my ability to trust my gut. And push for whatever is needed.
Liz, wow I felt like I was right there with you. Bode is diesel for going through that an age when it must have been terrifying. He’s a tough little dude. Wishing him a speedy recovery!
Thank you Mike! Bode is one tough dude :) Though to be clear... he's LOVING the extra attention still ha! Telling and showing anyone and everyone who will listen about how "he lost
As always such heartfelt words from the most caring mom ❤️ I will NEVER forget watching Nico come out of surgery as a toddler - there is something to chilling about seeing your child hooked up like that, under anesthesia (even for something totally routine and non-life threatening!) that just cuts you to your core.
I also had surgery for my scoliosis at Children's when I was a teenager, and I remember going in and thinking it was going to be the worst experience of my life. I was so down about the whole thing (because like I said, teenage girl here) until I got to the pre-op area and was sitting with multiple *children* who were so clearly in the throes of something far worse than my crooked spine. It was a wonderful lesson in exactly what you talked about here - being grateful for your health, for doctors and science, for a supportive community, and knowing when it's all over you get to leave and go home again. It's such a great reminder to all of us that things can change in a minute (I also found that out when my mom had appendicitis a year and a half ago... on the day my sister had her second baby... while I was 6 months pregnant 🫠) and that we can't take anything in this precious life for granted!
YES YES YES to all of this!! Thank you for these kind words and for being there as I vented when we were in the midst of it all at the hospital! Love you so much xo
Wow Liz so amazing that you trusted your gut and jumped into action for your son. My four-year-old son broke his leg a few months ago so we had a similar journey with a late night ER visit, overnight in the hospital, the fear and heartache of seeing your child in pain. And a very long recovery process! And through it all SO much support from amazing friends and family. Truly remarkable. I'm glad you are on the other side!
